Automation is how you make Vera do things automatically. Just like [[Scenes|scenes]], automation tells Vera what you want various devices to do, such as: Floor lamp dim to 40%, porch light off, and so on. The difference is that with a scene you have to tell Vera when you want to run the scene. With automation, Vera does this automatically with either a timer or event. A timer is tells Vera to do something at certain intervals, like every 5 minutes, or at certain times, like weekdays at 8pm. An event, on the other hand, causes Vera to do something when something else happens, such as "when the sun sets, turn on the porch light", or "when the motion detector in the garage is tripped, turn on the light for 5 minutes then turn it off".
