Adding the remote to Vera

The timing can be sensitive with this remote, so follow these steps exactly. The instructions assume you're running firmware 1.1.x or later, and that you will be leaving Vera as the primary Z-Wave controller in your home, adding the GE remote as a secondary.

1. On the remote, press the Z-Wave button once or twice until it says "Light", meaning you're in Z-Wave mode. Press and hold SET for 3 seconds until you see Z-Wave setup. Press "OK", press "RIGHT ARROW" several times until you see Network, press "OK", when it says Reset, press "OK". After you see Resetting Successful, press SET to go back 1 level so it says Network.

2. Press the Left arrow so it says Transfer, press "OK", press the Right arrow a few times until is says Receive. Do not press "OK" yet, just leave it at 'Receive'

3. UI4: In Vera's UI, choose Add, Devices, Z-Wave, scroll down to 'battery operated remote' and choose 'Add one'. Wait until you see the 'Add new devices now...' in Vera's info panel.

UI5: In Vera's UI, choose Devices, Add Devices, Advanced Z-Wave devices, the first option should be 'battery operated remote' and choose 'Add one'. Wait until you see the 'Add new devices now...' in Vera's info panel.

UI7: In Vera's UI, choose Devices, Add Devices, Generic Device then go through all the steps until you see 'Add new devices now...' in Vera's info panel.

4. Press "OK" on the GE remote to start the receive process. Be sure you see a SUCCESSFUL message on the remote. You can then press EXIT to get out of ZWave setup on the remote.

UI4: Now you can attach the GE remote's scene buttons to Vera's scenes the usual way by selecting the Scene in Vera, then the Events tab and open the control panel (press on the wrench key button), add an event, select the remote control, select the 'A scene is activated' event, and choose the scene number you want to use on the GE remote.

UI5: Now you can attach the GE remote's scene buttons to Vera's scenes the usual way by selecting the Scene in Vera from the Automation tab and open the control panel (press on the wrench key button), then select the Triggers tab, Add trigger , select the remote control, select the 'A scene is activated' event, and choose the scene number you want to use on the GE remote.

UI7: Now you can attach the GE remote's scene buttons to Vera's scenes the usual way by selecting the Scene in Vera from the Automation tab and open the control panel (press on the settings button, the arrow pointing to the right), then select the Triggers tab, Add trigger , select the remote control, select the 'A scene is activated' event, and choose the scene number you want to use on the GE remote.

IMPORTANT NOTE--Read carefully*:

  • The scene can have both lighting commands and non-lighting commands, like thermostat on/off. The GE remote only knows how to talk directly to lights. So when you activate a scene on the GE remote, the remote will control the lights directly, and will send Vera a message that you pressed the scene button so Vera can control all the non-lighting devices. After you have setup the scenes and events the way you want, you must repeat steps #2-4 above to add again the GE remote to Vera so that Vera can program the lighting parts of the scene directly in the GE remote.
  • Do not repeat step 1, resetting the network, since that will cause the remote to get added to the system a second time and will mess up your device list. So after your scenes and events are setup in Vera, press the ZWave button on the GE remote until it says LIGHT and then press and hold the SET button for 3 seconds to go back into Z-Wave setup mode on the GE remote, and then repeat steps #2 through 4 exactly like you did originally.
  • Since the remote is already in Vera's network it will not get added twice, but it is only while adding a remote into Vera's network that Vera can program the remote with the lighting scenes. So until you repeat this process the remote will not control your lights.
  • Once everything is setup to activate that scene on the GE remote press the SCENE button near the bottom of the remote, press the scene number, and CH+ to activate that scene, or press CH- to turn off whatever lights are in that scene. Pressing CH- will have no effect on the non-lighting devices in the scene, like thermostats.
